Soyini George is committed to expanding and cultivating the relationship between artists and art institutions.  As the former Outreach Specialist for the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, Soyini played an integral role in seeking local artists for the museum’s exhibitions and programming.  By making visits to the studios of artists, Ms. George facilitated discussion on the needs of the artist and cultivated their relationship with the museum.  Her efforts led to the inclusion of local artist in the museum’s exhibition cycle and the lines of communication between the artists and the museum became more open and fluid.

Prior to her experience at the Smithsonian, Soyini was the Outreach Coordinator for the National Cherry Blossom Festival, managing (to name a few) the Art Poster program, the Boutique Merchandise program and the Youth Ambassadors program, which were all  geared towards promoting the arts and the Festival’s local history in Washington, DC’s public and charter schools.

Ms. George’s ability to nurture  the relationship between artists and institutions stems from her own experience as an artist.  Operating under the trade name Yinibini, Soyini developed a line of handmade baby clothing and accessories that be found in several local stores, including WholeFoods, and on www.yinibinibaby.com. Yinibini Baby was recently voted 2nd place as the Best Local Crafter in the Washington City Paper’s Best of the City awards.

Ms. George is a native of Washington, DC who has lived in Guyana and Dominica. Soyini is a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, MA
